Prairie Mushrooms’ compost is an excellent soil conditoner. Spent mushroom compost is a popular choice among recreational and commercial gardeners and tends to be a far more effective soil conditioner than manure. As our compost is steam treated, it is virtually free of weeds and insects. Regular garden soil: cover with a 3-4 inch layer of compost Sandy or depleted soil: mix in 6-8 inches of mushroom compost with 6-8 inches of your soil. After planting your garden, loosen the soil row by row and cover it with a 1 1/2 inch layer of mushroom compost. This will eliminate any soil compaction which may occur due to repetitive watering or rainfalls, thus allowing for ideal air penetration to the roots of your plants.
